Melbourne: Australia’s top-order batsmen once again gave them a strong start in the second Test against West Indies. Opener Joe Burns (128) and No. 3 batsman Usman Khawaja (144) scored centuries and took the hosts to 345 for 3 on Day 1 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The twin centuries did not only put Australia in a dominating position in the Test, it also took Team Australia to an unprecedented milestone.
Burns and Khawaja reached their hundreds two balls apart, in the 58th over bowled by Jomel Warrican. Though Burns reached his century (second in Tests) first with a three off the very first delivery of the over, it was Khawaja who went down into the history books as he got the honour of hitting the 1000th century (all formats) for Australia two balls later.
It took Australia 1,725 matches, 21,460 innings and 489 players to reach the milestone in a span of 138 years – 1877 to 2015. Two more Australian batsmen — Steve Smith and Adam Voges — hit centuries on Sunday to take Australia’s tally to 10,002
England, the other half of cricket’s oldest rivalry and Australia’s Ashes competitors, are on second having scored 964 centuries so far from 1,704 matches and 23,153 innings. A total of 715 Englishmen have scored these centuries in the same span.
India are third on the list with 688 tons, scored by 339 players starting from 1932. Indians have played 16,426 innings of 1,443 matches to hit these centuries. West Indies (629), Pakistan (543), South Africa (501) complete the list with 500 or more hundreds. Sri Lanka (393), New Zealand (377) and Zimbabwe (107) are the teams to have number of tons in three figures. Bangladesh are in the tenth position with 77 hundreds.
