Jan 08 (ANI): Senior Madhesi leader Rajendra Mahato has said the people of Madhesh region have been deprived of their rights. Mahato was flown to New Delhi on January 01 after being injured in a clash between cadres of the Madhesi Morcha and police personnel at the Biratnagar-Jogbani border on December 26. Mahato said if Madhesis did not get their due rights, agitation can turn violent and the demand for independent nation can intensify. Madhesis, largely of Indian-origin, are agitating over the new constitution demanding more representation. They are also protesting the division of their ancestral homeland under the seven-province structure and have led an ongoing blockade of key border trade points with India. Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli will be visiting India early February. However, Mahato said before his visit to India Oli should ensure peace in his homeland. Mahato added that rights of Madhesis have been snatched by the Nepali government. He further added that entire world including India should put pressure on Nepal to solve the ongoing Terai unrest.</div>

Lawmakers at Legislature-Parliament meeting today urged the government to end existing political crisis set off by Indian unofficial blockade and ongoing Tarai protest. Delivering his view at the meeting, Nepali Congress lawmaker Ramhari Khatiwada lauded the declaration of former Finance Minister Dr Ram Sharan Mahat ‘finance minister of the year’ for his efforts to bring in many donations from the international community for the reconstruction projects damaged by the April 25 earthquake. He added that it was necessary for House to pass thank-giving proposal for the honor of Mahat by international community that has increased dignity of Nepal and Nepalese alike at a time when there is risk of polarization among various communities in Nepal lately. Dr. Ram Sharan Mahat receives The Banker’s Global and Asia-Pacific Finance Minister of the Year awards for his exemplary work in the aftermath of the two disastrous earthquakes that hit Nepal in 2015 and in pushing for reforms to improve governance in the country’s ministry of finance. Mr Mahat was the first Nepalese government official to interact with the international community after the earthquakes. He took a last-minute trip to the Asian Development Bank (ADB) annual meeting in Baku, Azerbaijan, to raise awareness among his peers and the press. Dr. Ram Sharan Mahat, a Nepali Congress leader, combines the rare backgrounds of a politician and technocrat. A political activist imprisoned several times since his early student days, he also served as a teacher and a UN civil servant in different countries. Hailing from Kabilas-8 of Nuwakot, Dr. Ram Saran Mahat, a senior politician and a technocrat, was born on January 1, 1951. He is the son of Khadga Bahadur and Tol Kumari Mahat and holds a Doctor in Philosophy in Economics. His political career began in 1973.<br />
